History of The First 4
The results
and box scores of past editions of the First 4 are
available
below. More than 7200 people attended the inaugural
event, making it the largest crowd to ever watch a
lacrosse game on the west coast! The First 4 is an elite
NCAA lacrosse invitational created to showcase the top
Division 1 men's lacrosse programs in the country. The
inaugural First 4 was held at the Home Depot Center in
Los Angeles, California on March 12, 2005.
THE 2006 FIRST 4
The second annual First 4 lacrosse
invitational on March 10th and 11th continued to build
upon the tradition established in last years successful
west coast debut of Division I men’s lacrosse. Torero
Stadium at The University of San Diego was an ideal
venue packing in over 5600 fans in the worst weather San
Diego has seen in some time. The high school and college
club games had all the intensity and excitement as the
Division I games. The physical play, talent and coaching
of these teams was stellar and produced some thrilling
entertainment. In the end the Southern California high
school teams were victors in 4 out of 5 match ups versus
the top teams from the north. St. Ignatius prevailed in
a close, hard fought contest over Coronado, who almost
pulled off a last minute comeback.
Matt Dean of the University of
California San Diego led his team into overtime against
the University of California Santa Barbara with a late
goal in the 4th quarter in our featured MDIA college
game. UCSD ended up sneaking by with a final score 8 to
7.
Duke vs. Loyola
In the main event, Loyola gave number three-ranked Duke
a run for their money with an early lead. MVP Matt Zash
responded for the Blue Devil’s with two goals in the
last 1:22 of the first quarter. The Greyhounds, trailing
6-3 at the half, came back strong defensively and
tightened the score to 6-5 but couldn’t hold on as Duke
won 9-7.

Navy vs. Bucknell
In the second game of the doubleheader, Navy had revenge
on their minds after Bucknell stole away the win the
last time these teams met. Bucknell took a 2-0 lead in
the first 5 minutes of the game and held the Mids
scoreless until the final minute of the first quarter.
Navy opened the second with a goal and outscored the
Bison 4-2. The second half was dominated by the Navy
defense, only allowing 1 goal. Junior William Wallace of
Navy won 16 of 17 face-offs earning MVP of the game and
leading his team to a 9-5 victory.
